In January 2010, WGSN’s Accessories team spotted the beginnings of a trend for rustic tooled leather work with American Western influences and included a hand held bag and wallet of this design in their spring/summer 2011 Key Shapes report. Features of these such as the vintage feel, stiff construction and whip stitching, were propagated on the catwalk by Gucci, Emilio Pucci and Diesel Black Gold, in a trend labelled Western Equestrian by our Catwalks Editor. Now at retail, we note the success of this accessory style, particularly in complementing the current 1970s trend.
Heritage dressing has been gathering pace for several seasons and in July 2009 our Womenswear team developed a trend pack which interprets heritage dressing as country tailoring with a strong equestrian influence. On the autumn/winter 2010/11 catwalks Country Heritage emerged as one of the most important looks of the season, shown by designers including Unique, Christian Dior, Paul & Joe and Antonio Marras. The trend has been picked up by key retailers for its hugely commercial appeal for markets across the globe.
Military looks are a perennial commercial favourite but back in May 2009 WGSN’s Menswear team focused in on outerwear, highlighting the military great coat as a key shape for autumn/winter 2010/11. The catwalk shows supported this assertion, with many of the seminal shows dominated by military outerwear. As retail collections hit the stores, military great coats lead the outerwear categories as one of the defining shapes of the autumn/winter 2010/11 season.
